One of the topics I found interesting in our reading was the
topic of conversational closings in chapter four. In the topic it explains the
importance of a closing in your speech or conversation. In the text it says,
“Endings play an important role in conversation. They signal that interaction
is about to wind down, establish a sense of closure, reassure participants that
the interaction has been successful, and establish conditions for future
interaction.” (Page 84)
I do agree with this, you have to have a good closing that
leaves the listener with a sense of understanding about what you have said and
they feel good about the conversation. Not only is a good closing good for
conversation, but also essays or papers. I know when it comes to a closing in
your school paper or essay it leaves the reader with a sense of the stance you
stand on with the subject or topic. It also gives the reader the option to
think of their own stance on the subject or better understanding of the topic.
I also found the topic of conversational closing interesting. I hadn’t really given the idea much thought before. The ability to effectively conclude a speech is vital in allowing the listener to completely comprehend the information in which the speech has presented. I believe this is equally important in all methods of communication whether it be formal or informal. I can’t express how many times I have come across a situation in which I was unable to tell if a person was finished in conveying a point because they never offered any type of conclusion to their original thought. It makes understanding the information or idea they were expressing harder to understand. Not to mention it has led to many an awkward conversation as you are never sure whether to move on or continue on the current topic at hand. Sadly, I have found this to be very true in some of the business meetings I have attended in my professional life.
